The Coming Flu Season

Each year, flu season shows up more quickly than we may expect. Preparing for each flu season is always a good idea, especially for those at a higher risk for more serious infections, such as seniors and those with underlying health issues. The team at BeeHive Homes has a few tips we suggest you follow the coming flu season.

Health care providers believe there will be a rise in cases of influenza this year, with three flu vaccines recommended for people age 65 and older. The US Center for Disease Control says you can get a flu vaccine at the same time as a Covid-19 vaccine, if you’re eligible and the timing coincides. It’s crucial to make sure you are prepared and taking the necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy as flu season arrives.

Keep these four things in mind...

  1. Keep things clean: Wash your hands often and disinfect any surfaces with which individuals come in frequent contact.
  2. Get a flu shot soon: It’s recommended to get a flu shot in September or October so that immunity has time to develop. Recently, we have seen the flu season show up sooner and last longer.
  3. Wear a mask: Wearing a mask in public will help prevent contracting the flu and reduce the spread of infection.
  4. Stock up on medicine: It is always a good idea to have over-the-counter medications handy in your home. We suggest having acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough syrup, a thermometer, and any other cold/flu medications you may need. It is also important to consult with your physician or caregiver if you have any concerns regarding over-the-counter medications that may interfere with prescribed medications.

Flu season isn’t something to be taken lightly. The Influenza virus can be serious for the elderly, especially those with pre-existing conditions and living in assisted living homes. At BeeHive Homes in New Mexico, our experienced staff is here to ensure you are safe and healthy. We make it our goal to set the standard for senior living. During flu season, we clean common areas more frequently and monitor residents in our small group residential homes for any signs of illness. Our pledge is to care for your family member as if they were our own.
