Tips for getting better sunshine
- Getting twenty-to-thirty minutes per day of outdoor activity is recommended for the elderly. This helps with the processing and release of serotonin, also known as the “happy chemical.” During the winter months, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can set in, which is known to reduce as the months get warmer. Symptoms may include feeling sluggish, sad most of the day, difficulty concentrating, and weight gain.
- It’s common to develop a vitamin D deficiency as we get older. Natural vitamin D is very different than supplemental vitamin D. Regular daily sun exposure is known to improve your life and reduce diseases such as depression, osteoporosis, hypertension, and diabetes.
- Sun exposure also helps with sleep quality. Sunlight causes a boost during the night where melatonin, “the sleep hormone,” helps with sleep patterns and mood. Our “natural clock” is meant for us to have sunlight in the day and darkness at night.
Studies have found that many elderly living in institutional settings do not get the amount of sunshine that they need. Our small-group assisted living homes are designed with outdoor space and we encourage residents to spend some time outside.
